Practice Report (8/1): Notes from the sideline

THEO-JOHNSON-CITIZENS

It was a very cool day for the Giants' eighth practice of camp, with temperatures in what felt like the sixties or low seventies, with a stiff breeze under cloudy skies. The players were in full pads for the two-hour practice.

* There was an early period for offensive and defensive line 1-on-1's. Jermaine Eluemunor and Brian Burns continue to line up against each other in 1-on-1's with a good battle back and forth. Eluemunor had the advantage in the early reps, but on the last rep of the session Burns managed to swipe Eluemunor's hands and get outside of him. Eluemunor has done well against the Giants top pass rushers, including a rep against Abdul Carter where he rode him around the quarterback on an outside speed rush.

* Aside from that one rep against Eluemunor, Carter was extremely difficult to block. He won on an inside rush against John Michael Schmitz. He showed quick hands and fast feet in getting by Jon Runyan with a ridiculously fast spin move. Carter was also tough to block during team periods, getting into the backfield for at least one potential sack.

* Chauncey Gholston continues to show his length and strength in 1-on-1's, leaning in with one arm to control the offensive linemen by getting his hand on the middle of their chest. Darius Alexander and Elijah Chatman both show burst and power to push the offensive linemen into the backfield. Kayvon Thibodeaux and James Hudson renewed their rivalry with a pair of reps against each other.

* The defense was very strong during the team portion of practice. Practice ended with three two-minute drill situations. The first team offense had to score a touchdown from their 18-yard line with 1:36 remaining and one timeout. Russell Wilson moved the ball inside the 30-yard line with :17 to go and no timeouts, but the defense held strong and finished the drive when Tyler Nubin intercepted a desperate throw as time expired.

* The second team offense also started its drive from their 22-yard line with 1:12 on the clock and one timeout. A Chauncey Gholston sack of Jaxson Dart short-circuited that drive right before midfield, giving the defense the stop.

* Jameis Winston had a bit of an easier situation with the third team. His team trailed by three with two timeouts remaining and 53 seconds left on the clock as his group's possession started on its own 20. Winston connected with Zach Pascal on an explosive play over the middle for a big gain to get the ball across midfield. But the defense held on despite a few deep pass attempts by Winston. Dee Williams had two pass break-ups deep down the right sideline on passes intended for Da'Quan Felton and Dalen Cambre, forcing a potential game tying field goal from Graham Gano from 43 yards away. They did not attempt the kick. O'Donnell Fortune also had a pass break-up on the drive, and another in the final team period.

* There were a number of other excellent defensive plays throughout practice. In addition to the two pass deflections, Dee Williams also had two interceptions on downfield pass attempts from Tommy Devito. He jumped a back shoulder attempt to Felton for his first and beat Cambre to the ball on the right sideline for the other.

*Dane Belton made a strong play on a ball during team drills, jumping a route for an interception which he took back the other way for what likely would have been a pick-six.

* Bobby Okereke, Darius Muasau and Micah McFadden had good run stops. Art Green, Nic Jones and Tre Hawkins got their hands on passes down the field to force incompletions. Deonte Banks played great defense on Wan'Dale Robinson on a deep pass down the left sideline, pinning him there and forcing the incompletion. Paulson Adebo knocked away a go-ball intended for Daniel Bellinger. Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns both had sacks in the final team period.

* The first of two big offensive plays came from Russell Wilson on a deep pass down the right sideline to Malik Nabers for a touchdown. Tyrone Tracy cut a pitch out to the right upfield and went untouched for what would have been a long touchdown.
