Practice Report (8/2): Notes from the sideline

ABDUL-KAYVON-CITIZENS

The Giants' ninth training camp practice was their third consecutive and second straight in pads. The weather was picture-perfect with temperatures in the 70's under bright, sunny skies and low humidity.

The team had a two-hour practice with three competitive team periods, but the final 30 minutes was a walkthrough.

* Instead of working 1-on-1 pass rush drills early in practice, the offensive and defensive lines worked on their games, the various twists and stunts where the defenders crisscross and set picks for each other to open up pass rush lanes to the quarterback. There is an art to executing them and blocking them that takes work in practice. For the most part, the offensive line did a good job working together and passing off rushers to one another. The one defensive line combination that consistently gave the offense trouble was Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, who chose to straight rush once or twice, which gave the offensive line fits. In their second year under coaches Carmen Bricillo and James Ferentz and with a number of returning players, the offensive line is working together well early in camp.

* During the same period, the wide receivers and cornerbacks worked 1-on-1, while the tight ends and running backs did the same against safeties and linebackers. Jaxson Dart made a perfect throw over the top to Montrell Washington for a score. The duo is building a nice chemistry, also connecting later in a team period on a throw over the middle that Dart purposely put low and slightly behind him to avoid a big hit from the safety. Deonte Banks played blanket coverage on a Malik Nabers out-route to force an incompletion. Nabers got his payback a few plays later, winning on a deep catch for a touchdown. Lil'Jordan Humphrey made a tough, contested catch over Tre Hawkins to end that period. Later in practice during a team period, Hawkins knocked away a pass intended for Humphrey.

* On the other end of the field, Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a good pass protection rep against Darius Muasau. Tight end Greg Dulcich created some space on an in-cut and made a catch from Jameis Winston. He made two other catches in the period, including a deep one over the top for a touchdown. Makari Paige played good defense down the field and knocked away a pass intended for Daniel Bellinger. Dane Belton played great defense breaking up a ball to Jermaine Terry II. Dante Miller got up the field and ran past line backer Micah McFadden for a long catch. McFadden dominated on a pass rush rep earlier in the period.

* Jameis Winston made a pair of nice throws during the first team period, connecting with Da'Quan Felton on a deep in-cut and on the next play hitting Jordan Bly in stride over the middle on a play action pass, setting up a potential long run after catch. Nic Jones had a blitz a bit earlier in the period that might have ended up in a sack.

* In the second team period, Roy Robertson-Harris and Brian Burns started on a high note for the defense, shutting down a pitch to the right to Tyrone Tracy Jr.

* A few plays later, the craziest play of camp occurred when Russell Wilson tried to find Wan'Dale Robinson deep, but Dru Phillips played good coverage and got his hand up to knock the pass away. Robinson went to the ground, but the deflection floated in the air and fell right into his midsection. He caught it, got up, and ran for a touchdown. It was some bad luck for Dru Phillips who played good defense throughout practice.

* Jeremiah Ledbetter batted a pass away at the line of scrimmage. A couple plays later, linebacker Dyontae Johnson carried Ihmir Smith-Marsette down the middle of the field on a deep post, forcing an incomplete pass. It was an impressive display of speed by the linebacker. Cornerback O'Donnell Fortune, who had a strong practice, shut down an outside run to Donte Miller and later knocked away a pass intended for Da'Quan Felton.

* The final period featured three move-the-ball opportunities for each offensive group. The defense got stops against the first and third groups, but Jaxson Dart managed to get the second group into the end zone for a touchdown. Edge rusher Trace Ford was in the backfield often during the drive, harassing Dart in the pocket. The offense put an exclamation point on the possession with a tight throw to Jordan Bly, who dove to the ground to grab the ball before it hit the turf for a touchdown.

* After a long walkthrough portion to end practice, Brian Daboll held a competition between the quarterbacks to see who could hit the cross bar from 25 yards away. Jameis Winston nailed it on his first try, and as a result, Daboll cancelled the team's evening walkthrough, giving the players an early start to their day off on Sunday.
