Practice Report (8/12): Notes from the sideline

THEO-JOHNSON-CITIZENS

The Giants and Jets wrapped up their first joint practice in Florham Park around noon on Tuesday after two hours of work. The temperature was around 90 degrees under bright skies.

* The first thing that's important to note is that it's impossible to see everything at a joint practice like this. At one point, for example, offensive line/defensive line 1-on-1's were going at the same time as 7-on-7s. In other words, there were four drills with live action simultaneously. We split the work between our Giants media group, with me taking the Giants defensive line in 1-on-1 drills. They had a good competition with the Jets O-line.

* Brian Burns was difficult to block with a late inside spin move on his first rep, and then a quick inside move for the win against rookie Armand Membou. Dexter Lawrence took a 1-on-1 rep and showed his power. Jordon Riley, Cory Durden and Roy Robertson-Harris won on different plays. Rookie Abdul Carter won with a quick inside rip move against fourth-year tackle Max Mitchell. D.J. Davidson had a good win against center Joe Tippmann, knocking him down. Rookie Darius Alexander won with power against Alija Vera-Tucker on one rep before beating Tippmann with a swim move on his third and final rep.

* Shaun O'Hara reported that the Giants offensive line did well against the Jets pass rush, winning the majority of their reps.

* During 7-on-7, the offense completed two impressive passes. The first came from Jaxson Dart to Montrell Washinton on a deep out on the sideline. Dart threw a few nice passes today, though on a couple he did not get a lot of help from his receivers. Jameis Winston had the second impressive throw, connecting with Thomas Fidone near the sideline, where the tight end reached out towards the boundary to make a tough catch. Jevon Holland had the best play for the defense during 7-on-7's, punching a ball out right after it got to the wide receiver.

* The defensive front caused some havoc during team drills between the Jets offense and the Giants defense. On a play where it appeared the Jets completed a long pass down the field, which brought cheers from the crowd, it looked like Abdul Carter would have taken the quarterback down before the pass was thrown. Later in that first team period, the defense forced two scrambles from the quarterback thanks to strong coverage and team pass pressure.

* In the next team period, Micah McFadden had a tackle for loss on a run play one rep before Brian Burns exploded around the edge for what would have been a sack. Two plays later, Elijah Chatman got into the backfield on a run play that would have been a tackle for loss. Two reps after that, K.J. Cloyd chased the Jets quarterback out of the pocket for what might have been another sack. In the final team period, Dexter Lawrence had a pressure, and McFadden combined with Darius Alexander for what would have likely been a sack.

* The first team defense allowed only one touchdown in their red zone action to close practice, with one of the plays featuring a pressure from Darius Alexander. Dane Belton had a tackle for loss, playing a quick pass to the right sideline well to make the play with the second group. TJ Moore had a nice blitz from the slot on one play, but the Jets got into the end zone a few times against the second group, with a couple of penalties called in the defensive backfield during the period.

* The offense got off to a slow start during team drills, with some sloppiness, incomplete passes and a lot of penetration into the backfield. But they turned it around during red zone work at the end of practice. The first team offense finished its period with three touchdowns. The first was a Russell Wilson slant to Theo Johnson over the middle and the second came on a Devin Singletary run where he was untouched into the end zone. The final score came on a Wilson throw to Darius Slayton toward the sideline in some traffic on the right side of the end zone.

* The second team offense scored on their final red zone play as Jaxson Dart threw what has become a patented back-shoulder throw to Zack Pascal along the left sideline. Pascal tapped his feet inbounds for the score.

* The two teams are back to work tomorrow at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford New Jersey.
