Practice Report (7/31): Notes from the sideline

WANDALE-ROBINSON-CITIZENS

After a day off on Wednesday, the Giants were back on the practice field on Thursday for a two-hour practice in shoulder pads and shorts under partly cloudy skies. Temperatures were only in the 80's, but it was hazy and humid making it more oppressive.

* Since the team was not fully padded, there were no offensive vs. defensive line 1-on-1's. After two heavy run days in pads on Monday and Tuesday, the focus was more on passing on early downs and third downs.

* The offense made a trio of big plays. The first came from Russell Wilson, who held onto the ball long enough for Malik Nabers to work downfield against Cor'Dale Flott. Wilson rolled slightly to his right and put enough air under the pass to allow Nabers to run under it. Flott was running with him, but Nabers managed to create some separation late to come down with the 50+ yard completion.

* Wilson connected on another big play, hitting on a slant to Wan'Dale Robinson, who made a quick move to separate from Dru Phillips. Robinson took off after the catch and it looked like he might have been able to take it to the house, but Phillips said after practice he would have made the tackle.

* The third explosive play came from Jaxson Dart, who dropped back and hit Montrell Washington for a nice diving catch on a crossing pattern over the middle. Washington would catch two short over the middle passes from Wilson and Jameis Winston later in practice.

* Art Green had a pair of pass break-ups on passes from Jameis Winston. The first came on a deep post over the middle with Green getting his hand on the ball to knock it away and prevent a long gain. The second came on a deep pass down the left sideline, where Green went airborne to knock it away.

* Jevon Holland jumped a short out route on the right sideline, nearly coming away with the interception. Tre Hawkins covered a back-shoulder attempt to Lil-Jordan Humphrey from Jaxson Dart late in practice to force an incompletion to get a stop for the defense in the "move the ball" period at the end of practice.

* Kayvon Thibodeaux batted a ball down at the line of scrimmage at the start of practice. Tomon Fox read a screen pass nicely and blew up the play, forcing Jameis Winston to throw it away.

* Chauncey Ghoslton was in the backfield a couple of times for what were either pressures or potential sacks.

* Brian Burns chased Russell Wilson out of the pocket on a play that likely would have been a sack in a game.

* Micah McFadden forced a play to be blown dead on what would have been a sack of Tommy Devito.

* Dyontae Johnson. Raheem Layne and Ty Summers all made good defensive plays around the line of scrimmage on runs and short passes.
