Practice Report (8/4): Notes from the sideline

DANIEL-BELLINGER-CITIZENS

The Giants were on the field today for their 10th practice of training camp. They wore helmets, shoulder pads and shorts as they continue to prepare for their first preseason game against in Buffalo on Saturday. Temperatures were only around 80 but you could feel the heat from the sun under cloudless skies. Practice lasted about one hour and 45 minutes.

Here's what I saw from the sideline:

See the best photos from Monday's training camp practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

* The first competitive portion of practice was offensive line-defensive line 1-on-1's. Jermaine Eluemunor got three reps against Abdul Carter and won all of them, getting his outside hand inside on Carter's chest to stop his rush on the first, then standing up to a bull rush and finally carrying Carter on a nasty dip move around the quarterback. Evan Neal stayed in front of the rusher on his two reps.

* Brian Burns showed his full repertoire, winning on a nasty quick outside spin on one rep and then a bull rush on another. Kayvon Thibodeaux had a good power bull rush of his own. Greg Van Roten returned after the birth of his daughter and showed his savvy with his hands, evading a swipe and getting his hands back on the rusher.

* The offense and defense ran 7-on-7 during the same period. On his first throw, Russell Wilson hit Theo Johnson on a lofted pass with perfect touch towards the sideline that Johnson went up and got despite the tight coverage from Dane Belton.

* Deonte Banks knocked away a pass on a slant to the left. Montrell Washington made an unbelievable leaping one-handed grab on an intermediate route to the perimeter from Jaxson Dart. Washington continues to shine at camp.

* Tommy DeVito threw a pass low and right between two deep zone players to Gunner Olszewski, who also caught four passes from Jameis Winston on the final drive of practice in a "move the ball" period. He had multiple diving grabs, including the final one for a touchdown.

* In team drills, Russell Wilson hit Malik Nabers on a slot fade for a long completion. Two plays later, Wilson completed a back-shoulder throw on the left sideline to Jalin Hyatt, though Deonte Banks did knock the ball out after the pass was completed.

* Darius Alexander had back-to-back pressures during team drills, slicing into the backfield and forcing the quarterback to roll out towards the perimeter. Dexter Lawrence had an impactful run stop on Tyrone Tracy Jr. Elijah Chatman and Dane Belton combined to stop Russell Wilson short of the goal line on a red zone scramble. On the final play of red zone drills, Russell Wilson hit Jalin Hyatt in the back of the end zone for what looked like a touchdown, but it appeared he stepped out of bounds earlier in the play, making it illegal touching.

* Jaxson Dart threw a touchdown on his turn in the red zone, finding Zach Pascal for a score towards the back of the end zone. Tommy DeVito finished off the red zone work with a touchdown to Dante Miller over the top towards the back of the end zone.

* The defense got stops against the first and second team offense on their final competitive "move the ball" drives. Jevon Holland put an exclamation point on his group's stop with an interception on a throw over the middle that he might have returned for a score, though Russell Wilson might have gotten there to push him out of bounds. Wilson was harassed by Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux on separate plays. Wilson did complete two passes to Malik Nabers. One converted a fourth down on a sliding catch towards the left sideline. The first was an amazing leaping catch as Nabers went airborne to come down with the ball.

* Jaxson Dart started his drive around midfield and moved the ball inside the 10 after completing some short passes and succeeding on some runs before the period ended on third down around the five-yard line.

* Raheem Layne (who also had a run stop), TJ Moore, Makari Paige and Trey Hawkins all had pass break-ups during practice.
