Notes & stats about the Thursday night matchup

BRIAN-BURNS-JAMESON

Notes and statistics to get you ready for Thursday Night Football between the Giants (1-4) and Eagles (4-1) at MetLife Stadium.

Last time out

The Giants and Eagles both lost their Week 5 games after holding double-digit leads.

The Giants jumped out to an 11-point lead in New Orleans before giving up 23 unanswered points to end the 26-14 loss.

Philadelphia was on its way to a 5-0 start after taking a 17-3 lead into the fourth quarter at home against Denver, which proceeded to score 18 consecutive points in the final 13 minutes.

The Giants are the only team this season with multiple losses after leading by double digits (also Week 2 at Dallas). The Eagles have had a swing of at least 10 points in the second half of each of their last three games.

The Giants play the Eagles twice in 17 days with a trip to face the Broncos in between.

A lot of firsts for Dart

In Week 4, Jaxson Dart became the first rookie quarterback to beat a team 3-0 or better (Chargers) in his first career start since Phil Simms in 1979.

In Week 5, the 25th overall pick made his first road start at the Superdome.

In Week 6, he will start his first primetime game on a short week against a divisional rival.

The Eagles boast Jalen Hurts, who is 50-21 as a starter in the regular season.

In good company

There have been only four quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to rush for at least 50 yards in each of their first two career starts – Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Randall Cunningham, and now Dart. With another, Dart would join Hurts and Jackson as the only ones to do so in their first three starts.

Speaking of rushing

Saquon Barkley, the 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, will line up against the Giants for the second time in his career. Barkley ran for 176 yards and a touchdown in his first game against his former team and rested in the second leg of the 2024 season series. Barkley had six carries last week, his fewest attempts since 2021 with the Giants. Barkley has averaged 126.4 scrimmage yards per game over his five career Thursday outings, third-most in NFL history (minimum five games) behind Walter Payton (138.4) and Arian Foster (131.8).

In the zone

The Eagles lead the NFL with a red zone touchdown conversion rate of 92.3 percent; the Giants' defense is tied for ninth in that category at 57.1 percent.

The Eagles also excel in the red zone defensively, allowing touchdowns on just 42.9 percent of opponents' drives (third-lowest in the NFL). The Giants' offense is last at 31.6 percent, despite two successful drives to start Sunday's game in New Orleans.

Protect the ball

Following the aforementioned touchdowns, the Giants punted twice and then proceeded to turn the ball over on five consecutive drives (three fumbles, one of which was returned 86 yards for a touchdown, and two interceptions) against the Saints. It came a week after the Giants never turned the ball over against the Chargers in Dart's first start.

Philadelphia has five takeaways, tied for 17th in the league, and is the only team not to turn the ball over multiple times this season. Hurts has not thrown a regular-season interception since Week 10 of last season. His 279 straight pass attempts without an interception is the longest active streak in the NFL.

Did you know?

According to NFL Research, the last rookie quarterback to defeat a reigning Super Bowl MVP quarterback head-to-head within his first three career starts was Cleveland's Colt McCoy in 2010 (won 30-17 at New Orleans against Drew Brees). Brian Daboll was the offensive coordinator of the Browns at the time. Hurts was named MVP of Super Bowl LIX.
