25 Questions in 25 Days: State of Giants' offensive line

OFFENSIVE-LINE-25-QUESTIONS

Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2025 Giants Training Camp with 25 questions in 25 days.

15) What is the state of the offensive line?

Dan Salomone: Through the first six games of last season, general manager Joe Schoen thought the offensive line performed well enough for the Giants to play winning football. Unfortunately, there were 12 weeks after that.

That's when left tackle Andrew Thomas went down with a season-ending foot injury. After the starting five had played 100 percent of the snaps together to that point, the Giants used 10 different combinations the rest of the way, tying them with the Patriots for the most in the NFL and their 2023 total.

The Giants are being "smart" with the rehab process for Thomas, who was held out during spring practices. At the end of minicamp in mid-June, coach Brian Daboll said Thomas is "getting close to getting back out here."

Meanwhile, Greg Van Roten, who re-signed this offseason, was the only player on the team to line up for every snap on his respective side of the ball. The veteran made 15 starts at right guard and the last two at center – all after signing one week into training camp.

That means the Giants will head into the 2025 season with the same starting five from a year ago, but they will be protecting a different quarterback in Russell Wilson. They did bolster the group with the signings of veterans Stone Forsythe and James Hudson III, a former fourth-round draft choice who can serve as the swing tackle. The team then used a fifth-round draft choice on Purdue offensive lineman Marcus Mbow, who has the potential to play all five positions but has started out at tackle with the Giants.

Speaking of playing multiple positions, Evan Neal has moved to guard. The seventh pick in the 2022 draft has started 27 games in his career, all at right tackle.

"I think when you look at the job description in our system for the guard, can he create movement at the line of scrimmage, can he keep the interior firm in pass protection?" assistant general manager Brandon Brown said. "We've seen Evan do it before. We need the flashes to be consistent. He's been fully bought in with the move. Just knowing that leaning on your strengths, there are not that many men that are as big as he is inside at guard and playing with better balance. [Offensive line coach] Carm [Bricillo] and James [Ferentz] have been working with him throughout this spring. Evan is putting in his work. We're excited to see what he shows when the pads come on in training camp. Excited to see that he has the physical tools and skill set to transition inside. We just need to see it consistently."

Below is a deeper look at the state of the offensive line.

THE VETERAN NEWCOMERS

James Hudson III

Previous Team: Cleveland Browns

Career: 49 G, 17 GS (14 at RT, 3 at LT)

Hudson, 6-5 and 313 pounds, was originally selected by the Browns in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played in 47 regular-season games with Cleveland and made 17 starts – 14 at right tackle over his first three seasons and three at left tackle last year.

As a rookie, while playing in 12 games with four starts at right tackle, Hudson helped Cleveland lead the NFL with 5.09 yards per carry, the highest average by a Browns team since 1966. The offensive line opened holes for Nick Chubb, who finished second in the league in rushing yards that year and third the next season.

Stone Forsythe

Previous Team: Seattle Seahawks

Career: 53 G, 14 GS (11 at RT, 3 at LT)

Forsythe, 6-8 and 307 pounds, played in 53 games with 14 starts (11 at right tackle and three at left tackle) in four seasons with the Seahawks. He also has one postseason appearance.

A sixth-round draft pick by Seattle in 2021, Forsythe started a career-high eight games in 2023 (five at right tackle and three at left tackle). He took over at right tackle for an injured George Fant in the 2024 season opener. Forsythe then started the next five games before a hand injury landed him on injured reserve. Forsythe returned for the final three weeks of the season.

THE DRAFT PICK

Marcus Mbow
