Brian Callahan is in his first season as the New York Giants' passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. He brings 16 years of NFL coaching experience to the Giants, including the previous two seasons as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
Callahan spent five seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals (2019-23), where he played an integral role in the team's two AFC North Titles, two AFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl LVI berth.
Under Callahan's tutelage from 2020-23, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow ranked among the top of the league in several passing metrics, including the fourth-highest completion percentage (68.0), the seventh-highest passer rating (98.6) and the ninth-most passing yards (14,083). In 2021, Burrow was named the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year to go along with his first career Pro Bowl.
Additionally, receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins combined for five 1,000-yard seasons during Callahan's tenure. Chase opened his career with three straight seasons of 1,000+ yards and three Pro Bowl appearances, while Higgins surpassed 1,000 yards in both 2021 and 2022. Running back Joe Mixon also thrived under Callahan, rushing for 1,000+ yards in four of five seasons with Callahan as his offensive coordinator. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2021.
In 2018, Callahan served as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders, working closely with Derek Carr. That season, Carr threw for a then-career-high 4,049 yards and led the AFC with a 68.9 percent completion rate.
Callahan previously spent two seasons (2016–17) as the Detroit Lions' quarterbacks coach. While working with Callahan in 2017, Matthew Stafford finished among the NFL's best in passing yards (third, 4,446), completions (third, 371), passing touchdowns (fourth, 29), completion percentage (sixth, 65.7) and passer rating (sixth, 99.3).
Callahan began his NFL coaching career in 2010 as a coaching assistant for the Denver Broncos. He worked in a variety of roles across six seasons in Denver, including offensive quality control coach (2011-12), offensive assistant (2013-14) and offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach (2015). In his final season in Denver, the Broncos defeated the Panthers in Super Bowl 50.
Before coaching in the NFL, Callahan worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, UCLA, in 2006 and 2007. He spent the next two years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, Calif.
Born in Champaign, Ill., Callahan attended De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif. He attended UCLA, where he was a walk-on quarterback who appeared in 13 games as a holder on PATs. Callahan earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 2006 and a master's degree in education in 2008.
He and his wife, Allyson, have two children: a son, Ronan, and a daughter, Norah. He is the son of longtime college and NFL coach Bill Callahan, who is currently the Atlanta Falcons' offensive line coach.
