Grant Newsome most recently served as Michigan's offensive line coach in 2024–25. Under his guidance in 2025, Michigan averaged 5.4 yards per rush, leading the Big Ten and ranking among the top 15 nationally. In 2024, his first season overseeing the offensive line, the Wolverines allowed 17 sacks, tied for the third fewest in the conference.
As Michigan's tight ends coach in 2022 and 2023, Newsome worked closely with AJ Barner, Colston Loveland and Luke Schoonmaker, all of whom are now in the NFL. Loveland, the Chicago Bears' first-round pick in 2025, caught 45 passes for 649 yards and 4 touchdowns in Newsome's final season working with the tight end group. Barner, a fourth-round selection by the Seattle in 2024, was a key contributor on the Seahawks Super Bowl LX championship team.
Newsome worked with the offensive line as a graduate assistant in 2020-21. The unit won the 2021 Joe Moore Award, presented annually to the nation's top offensive line. All five 2021 starters earned all-conference recognition, with four of the five being awarded first- or second-team honors.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant in 2018-19, primarily working with the tight end group. The trio of tight ends Newsome worked with in those two seasons amassed 98 receptions for 1,366 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Newsome played offensive tackle at Michigan in 2015-16 before transitioning to coaching after a serious injury forced him to medically retire. He played in 10 games (six starts) and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in each of his seasons. He was honored with the 2016 Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship, given to the team's top student athlete, as well as the Robert P. Ufer Bequest award, presented to the player who demonstrates the most love and enthusiasm for Michigan.
A native of McLean, Va., Newsome attended high school at Lawrenceville School in Lawrence Township, N.J. He graduated from Michigan with a bachelor's degree in American Culture and later earned a master's degree in public policy. Widely regarded as a rising star in the coaching profession, he was named to 247Sports' Top 30 Under 30 in 2021 and the American Football Coaches Association's 35 Under 35 Class of 2023.
