The New York Giants signed veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith, a former second-round draft choice who made two starts in four games with the Giants last season, to the practice squad.

In a corresponding move, the team released offensive tackle KC McDermott from their practice squad.

Smith was a free agent after spending time on and off the Giants' practice squad last season. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Notre Dame product played for three teams in 2021 – the Giants, Packers, and Cowboys, who originally took him with the 34th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Smith had 12 tackles and a sack in his time with the Giants.

Overall, Smith has played in 74 regular-season games with 58 starts, racking up 330 tackles (21 for loss), 10 sacks, two interceptions, 21 passes defensed, 16 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries. Smith also started two postseason games in Dallas.

The 2-0 Giants host the 1-1 Cowboys on Monday night.
