Joint Practice Report: Defense looks 'ferocious'

GROUP-DEFENSE-CITIZENS

Thursday's joint practice between the Dolphins and Giants at the Dolphins practice facility adjacent to Hard Rock Stadium lasted for over two hours. Both teams were in pads with temperatures rising into the low 90's with high humidity under mostly sunny skies. It was quite steamy.

* It is impossible to see everything that happens during joint practices. At one point, six different position groups were practicing competitively at the same time. At other times there were four or two, until the final situational period when the two teams were working two-minute drives on one field. Our editorial and broadcast team split the fields up as best as we could to see as much as possible.

* Practice was physical, with the play going a bit over the line a couple times, which resulted in a couple of small fracases, but the teams got the work in they needed without too much disruption.

* The Giants pass rush was incredibly tough to block during the majority of practice. Abdul Carter was in the backfield constantly, and was joined at different times by Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Chauncey Golston. The final two minute period for the Dolphins ended in a three and out after a Carter sack on first down, an Arvell Reese stop at the line of scrimmage on second down and a Dru Phillips sack off a nickel blitz on third down. The Dolphins lost yards on the drive. Miami's offense was given a fresh set of downs and did drive down for a field goal after the Giants took their starting defensive front off the field.

* Giants head coach John Harbaugh was happy with the pass rush. "It was ferocious," he said. "It was ferocious. That's practice, so you've got to come do it in the game. But I was impressed with it."

* The Giants scored during their two-minute offense. Jaxson Dart started with a pair of completions to tight end Isaiah Likely, who was a constant target throughout the afternoon. The big play came on third down, when Theo Johnson caught a ball in the flat and turned it upfield for what could have been a long catch and run for a touchdown, but the officials called him down. The Giants spiked the ball with 14 seconds remaining. On the next play, Dart hit Malachi Fields on a slant, who smartly slid to the ground, giving the offense time to spike the ball and leave three seconds on the clock. Dominic Zvada then made the game-winning field goal.

* Zvada made all five of his kicks during the field goal portion of practice, including three from 50+ yards. The longest was from 59 yards with plenty of room to spare. Sauls made three of his five kicks.

* Practice started with 1-on-1's between the big guys in pass protection, the tight ends and running backs against the linebackers and safeties in coverage, and wide receivers vs, defensive backs. Jaxson Dart started practice by airing it out deep down the left sideline, hitting Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III on consecutive plays with perfect passes for touchdowns. Dart also connected with Fields on a 20+ yard back-shoulder completion. Odell Beckham Jr. caught a pass in the flat during the period and put a quick move on the defender to blow by him.

* On defense, Deonte Banks created a turnover on the first defensive rep of 1-on-1's. He blanketed Jalen Reagor on a deep route down the sideline before getting his head around, locating the ball, and getting it out of Reagor's hands for the interception. Greg Newsome II, Elijah Campbell and Art Green all had pass breakups in the period. Jevón Holland broke early on an out-route to a tight end, undercutting it and coming up with an interception of his own.

* Sisi Mauigoa was strong in 1-on-1's, winning both his reps before leaving practice during a later period. Jermaine Eluemunor and Andrew Thomas had good battles with talented speed rushers Chop Robinson and Josh Uche. Marcus Mbow and JC Davis kept their rushers off the quarterback, as did center John Michael Schmitz.

* Carter and Thibodeaux both had wins during their 1-on-1 period, with the latter rushing inside and outside. DJ Reader and Zacch Pickens showed their ability to collapse the depth of the pocket.

* During the first team period, Jaxson Dart hit Isaiah Likely on a deep crossing route for a big gain after being given time by Tyrone Tracy Jr. on a good blitz pickup. The offense picked up another blitz later in the period, giving Dart time to float a pass to Austin for a big gain. Jameis Winston made a great layered throw, getting it over the linebacker to Darnell Mooney for a strong gain right in front of the defensive back. In the subsequent period, Dart connected with Likely downfield on a play action pass, and Tracy had a long run up the middle. Cam Skattebo was not shy about lowering his shoulder to deliver the blow instead of receiving it from aggressive Dolphins defenders.

* Golston had a pair of sacks and a run stop during the first team period, with one of the sacks coming on a play action boot to his side where he got upfield to force the officials to blow the play dead. Arvell Reese tracked all the way out to the sideline to deliver a hit after a short completion. Abdul Carter had a sack, using his speed to win around the edge. Micah McFadden had a pair of run stops, and Paulson Adebo had one of his own.

* In red zone work, Najee Harris ran it right onto the goal line to close out the period with a potential touchdown for the Giants offense. The Giants defense made a number of plays, including a DJ Reader tackle for loss, a Brian Burns tackle for loss and forced fumble followed by a Newsome recovery, and an Arvell Reese run stop. Kayvon Thibodeaux made a good play getting his hands up on a play action boot to his side and batting the pass away in the quarterback's face before it could reach an open receiver in the flat. Thibodeaux and Marlon Davidson also had a quarterback pressure in the period. Chandler Martin had a stop on a designed quarterback run on a bootleg.

* During the move-the-ball periods, Thibodeaux, Carter and Burns were all in the backfield at different times for pressures and potential sacks. Holland was in perfect position after a short catch for an immediate tackle. Adebo got in front of an out-route for an interception on the left sideline. McFadden had a quick stop after a pass in the flat.

* On offense, Dart hit Fields on an off-schedule play that turned into an out and up for a long gain down the left sideline.  Winston showed his touch and hit Austin between the second and third layers of the defense on the right sideline.

* The Giants will walk through some corrections tomorrow in preparation for the game on Saturday at 4PM against the Dolphins.

The Giants and Dolphins held a joint practice in Miami ahead of their preseason matchup.
