Practice Report (8/18): Sideline observations

PAT-RICARD-CITIZENS

The Giants today were back on the field for a padded practice before leaving for Miami Wednesday. Temperatures were in the mid-80's under partly cloudy skies.

* The first competitive portion of practice featured 9-on-7 at the same time as wide receiver-defensive back 1-on-1's. During 9-on-7, Micah McFadden and Arvell Reese both had plays where they filled the middle against the run to stop the back in the hole.

* Reese continued his play with an impressive pass breakup during red zone team drills, leaping to knock away a pass to the right sideline. Reese got his hand on another ball on a fade route during red zone 7-on-7 drills.

* During 1-on-1's, Dru Phillips got his hand in front of Darnell Mooney to knock away a pass. Raheem Layne played good coverage, running with a receiver on a deep route down the sideline. Newcomer Ugo Amadi played physical coverage in the slot, attaching to the receiver and knocking a pass away. Cornerbacks TJ Woods and Greg Newsome also played tight coverage during the period.

* The offense made some plays, led by Calvin Austin III, who caught two passes, including a fake stutter go that he turned into a deep comeback route. The route drew the attention of the watching players. Isaiah Hodgins caught a pass on a deep comeback for a big gain. Jaxson Dart connected with Malachi Fields on a back shoulder pass down the right sideline right before connecting with Braxton Berrios on an accurate deep pass over the top for a big gain.

* The situational period focused on 3rd down and short plays.

* The first team period focused on early down plays. Abdul Carter started by jetting into the backfield for a potential sack. Damon Bankston turned the corner on an outside run to the left for a big gain. Jameis Winston connected with Darnell Mooney on a deep in-cut. Brandon Allen connected with Thomas Fidone on a reaching catch, though Kayvon Thibodeaux was in the backfield for a potential sack. Darius Alexander and Thibodeaux combined for a tackle for loss and on the next play, Beau Brade and Zaire Barnes did the same. On the very next play, Barnes knocked a pass away.

* The highlight from that first team period was Malik Nabers skying in the air for a leaping catch on a pass over the middle. Jevón Holland was in the neighborhood but did a good job respecting the red non-contact jersey and not touching Nabers on the play.

* The next period focused on fourth and short situations. Art Green had a pass breakup. Micah McFadden and Ar'Darius Washington both had run stops. Braxton Berrios caught a ball in the flat and got close to the pylon for a potential score before getting forced out of bounds.

* In the red zone team period, Winston connected with Dalen Cambre on a slant for a touchdown. Trace Ford burst through the middle of the line for a potential sack. On the next play, Leki Fotu got pressure on the quarterback which forced a quick throw, with Brade stepping up quickly to make the stop after the catch.

* During offensive line – defensive line 1-on-1's, rookie Sisi Mauigoa kept the defensive linemen away from the quarterback. Marcus Mbow flashed a strong punch at initial contact at right tackle on his first rep before showing his quick feet riding the defender around the quarterback on his second. Aaron Stinnie and Josh Ezeudu flashed on a couple reps. Kayvon Thibodeaux won a couple times rushing against guards. J.C. Davis got a chance to go against Abdul Carter on one rep and managed to keep him off the quarterback after an attempted inside rip move.

* During the final pass-oriented period, Tyrone Tracy Jr. stepped up to meet Arvell Reese on an inside blitz that could be heard near the sideline. Ugo Amadi also had a pass breakup in the period.

* The Giants fly to Miami on Wednesday afternoon before a Thursday morning joint practice with the Dolphins. The two teams play Saturday at 4 p.m.
