Practice Report (8/1): Notes from the sideline

TREMAINE-EDMUNDS-CITIZENS

The Giants were back on the practice field for the fourth consecutive day at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It was "Back Together Saturday" as the league celebrated all the training camps around the league being open and the preseason and regular season on the horizon. Temperatures were around 80 degrees, but it was a bit more humid as rain is entering the forecast tonight and tomorrow.

* The fans were out in force filling the four bleachers and lining the fences around the practice fields. The attendance from fans at a training camp that's more than 450 miles from MetLife Stadium is truly impressive.

* The Giants worked on kickoffs during the early special teams portion of practice. No fewer than nine players from running backs to wide receivers to defensive backs were fielding kicks. John Harbaugh was right in the middle of the drills coaching the coverage and return units. They used a rope system to help players align properly, which created alleys that seemed to help players understand their spacing during the drills. I had never seen it before but it seemed like an ingenious way to assist the players getting in the right spots.

* I watched the defense during individual drills and they set up four stations that the four positions groups rotated to with each performing the same drills. One was a fumble recovery station teaching the players to slide and cradle the ball rather than fall on top of it to prevent it from bouncing away. The other three drills were ball attacking drills: teaching a punch on the ball, a grab and pull out from behind, and finally a pass rush drill where the players attacked the ball on a tackling dummy set up in a throwing motion. Winning the turnover battle is the key to every game.

* The first team period started with a bang for the offense. Jaxson Dart placed a deep ball perfectly over the outside shoulder of Malachi Fields on a deep route down the left sideline for a big gain as Abdul Carter closed in as a pass rusher.

* Two plays later, the defense got revenge. After a pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage, the ball went right to Paulson Adebo, who returned it for a potential touchdown. Darius Alexander was in the area, and he had another pressure and a sack later in practice. A few plays later, another pass was batted at the line. John Harbaugh talked earlier this week about the importance of defensive linemen getting their hands up, and the front continues to get their hands on the ball.

* Korie Black had a pass breakup during the period. DJ Reader penetrated on a run play for what would have been a tackle for loss. Abdul Carter had another pressure, forcing a Jaxson Dart scramble, and then knocked a pass down at the line of scrimmage as the rest of the pass rush closed in on the quarterback. Defensive backs continue to be active in the blitz game, with Jason Pinnock getting to the quarterback.

* The situation portion in the middle of practice had the offense working on running the ball or completing a short pass before getting to the line of scrimmage to get a field goal off before time expired. Dominic Zvada had a great day. Between the field goal kicking portion of practice, this situational period, and the move the ball portion of practice to close the day, he only missed one of at least 14 kicks, including several of more than 50 yards.

* During the situational period, Jameis Winston decided to take a shot in the end zone instead of settling for a field goal attempt. Odell Beckham Jr. ran an excellent route to create space on the cornerback on a post to the back line. He leapt to make the catch on a well-thrown pass and got his feet down for the touchdown.

* Giants linebackers had an active day in coverage. Rookie Jack Kelly had one pass breakup on a short throw over the middle, but his second came on a deep pass where he had to carry the receiver deep down the field. He got his head around, located the ball, and knocked it away. Darius Muasau knocked a pass away deep down the middle of the field, as well.

* Tremaine Edmunds made the biggest play roaming the middle of the defense. The quarterback tried to throw a touch pass over his head to Isaiah Likely on a crossing route, but didn't put enough juice on the ball to clear the linebacker. Edmunds jumped to come down with the interception.

* Colton Hood had an interception late in practice, jumping a route in front of him, but the defense was offsides and Jameis Winston called out that it was a free play immediately after the snap. It would not have counted in a game situation.

* Dart completed two impressive passes during 7-on-7. The first was a deep out-breaking route to Calvin Austin III down the right sideline, and the second a well thrown flag route to Theo Johnson over his shoulder for a long catch.

* DJ Reader had a potential sack in the final team period, and Josh Tupou had a run stop near the line of scrimmage. Brian Burns and Abdul Carter had back to back pressures later in the period.

* Practice ended with a move the ball period. The offense had the ball down 11 with 6:24 on the clock at their own 25-yard line. It had to move the ball down the field and get a score with enough time left on the clock to kickoff and give the defense a chance to get a stop. Both offenses kicked field goals before the two-minute warning. It was the defense's job to prevent any big plays and a quick score, which it did.

* The Giants are off Sunday and return for their first padded practice on Monday.
