The Giants had their longest full-speed practice of camp so far. Weather was around 80 degrees under sunny skies after thunderstorms hit the area last night and are supposed to pass through this afternoon. Fans were in attendance for the last time in West Virginia, with the final closed practice tomorrow in the late morning/early afternoon before the team flies back to New Jersey.
* The team worked on inside run again in 9-on-7 drills early in practice. The offense broke one or two runs, but the defense was stout up the middle. Arvell Reese had one impressive run fit that you could hear from the other side of the field. You not only see him play, but the sound he makes when he makes good contact is unique and hard to miss.
* During that same period ,the Giants did receiver-defensive back 1-on-1s. Darius Slayton had a quick release to create space on a shallow in-cut. Calvin Austin III and Jalin Hyatt created separation down the field for catches. Darnell Mooney got open on an out-route and Malachi Fields made a catch on a back-shoulder throw.
* John Harbaugh commented after practice how Jaxson Dart handled the blitz well. Throughout practice, including a period the Giants focused on third downs, Dart got the ball out quickly to complete passes against what looked like fairly exotic pressure packages. He hit Isaiah Likely on a back-shoulder throw, who made a leaping catch in front of the defense. He also connected with Darnell Mooney to convert a third down and about seven yards as Arvell Reese came charging towards him in the backfield. The defense made sure they were not allowing deep throws for most of the drill, and Harbaugh said after practice that the offense did well to take the short passes and try to run after the catch for first down.
* The situational period featured third down plays leading to field goal attempts. Ben Sauls made kicks from 51 and 48 yards, while Dominic Zvada made a kick from 48 yards away.
* In a period focused on first and second down with the coaches making play-calls from the sideline, Darius Alexander and Josh Tupou had sacks, while Deonte Banks had a tackle for loss on the edge. Thomas Fidone II made a diving catch on a pass from Jameis Winston on a quick out. Chauncey Golston, Afernee Orji, and Bobby Jamison-Travis all had run stops.
* During the third down period, Brian Burns charged in for a sack. Jameis Winston completed four consecutive passes for first downs with the first two going to Dalen Cambre, and then two more to Hyatt and Xavier Gipson. Eric Gray had a blitz pick-up, stepping up to block a defender coming down the middle of the formation.
* Zaire Barnes grabbed an interception that could have went back for a touchdown on a short pass to the right, and both he and Trace Ford were in the backfield and around the quarterback during the period.
* The next live period focused on tempo. The offense got to the line quickly between plays, not huddling for the majority of the period. Jamison-Travis had a run stop. Rookie linebacker Jack Kelly scraped over the top to make a play on a run to the edge. Reese tracked down Cam Skattebo on an outside run and Ar'Darius Washington stayed at home on an end-around to prevent a big gain. Orji, Barnes and Raheem Layne all were in good positions on different plays to make stops.
* During offensive-defensive line 1-on-1s, the offensive tackles did well to force the edge rushers outside and behind the quarterback. Kayvon Thibodeaux had a quick win on a swim move inside, but when the next rusher tried the same move on center Bryan Hudson, he got his hands on the rusher's chest and stoned him. Golston had consecutive pass rush wins from the outside and inside. JC Davis showed some savvy pulling a rusher down to the ground, trying to lean forward and bull rush him. At the end of the period they ran some pass rush games to let the lines practice twists and stunts. The speed and explosion when Burns and Abdul Carter combine in these 2-on-2 drills is fun to behold.
* During those 1-on-1s, the offense ran 7-on-7 against the linebacker and defensive backs, making some big plays. Isaiah Likely made back to back long gains on crossing routes. Dart completed a third deep pass to Calvin Austin III on a deep over right before hitting Tyrone Tracy Jr. on a deep wheel route down the field for a 60-yard score.
* The practice ended with two long drives. The first-team offense methodically moved the ball down field on 13 plays all the way inside the five-yard line. Dart completed six passes and Tracy Jr. had successful runs up the middle. Micah McFadden, Darius Alexander and Washington had run stops on the drive. The drive was supposed to end after 13 plays, but the offense lobbied for one red zone opportunity and John Harbaugh let them run one more play. Dart his Darius Slayton on a quick out for a score near the right pylon.
* The second team offense had a 13-play drive of their own, moving the ball down to the 17-yard line with a combination of runs and short passes. Winston converted a second-and-11 on a pass to Juju Smith-Schuster and a third-and-11 to Isaiah Hodgins to extend the drive. Even though it was first down, Harbaugh called Zvada out and he made a 35-yard field goal to end the day.
* The final practice at the Greenbrier is tomorrow. I will be in a car with Dan Salomone trying to get home for my daughter's birthday party, so Matt Citak will have the report.
