The Giants were back on the field for their third fully padded practice day in a row. It lasted over two hours. After rain in the late morning, practice ended up being in perfect conditions with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 80s.
* Special teams worked on kick coverage in the early portion of practice. I saw Nic Jones, Elijah Campbell, Deonte Banks, Raheem Layne and Art Green all get reps as gunners, with Layne, Jalin Hyatt, Dru Phillips, David Long, DJ James, Korie Black and Dalen Cambre getting opportunities as the players blocking the gunners.
* Cambre had another busy day as a receiver. He got open during 1-on-1's for the second straight day and made a tough catch near the sideline during the team period. Xavier Gipson showed off his speed catching a deep ball over the top on a safety during 1 on 1's. Calvin Austin III had a great release at the line of scrimmage, which led to a long gain on a crossing route.
* The secondary made some plays during 1-on-1's. Dru Phillips played tight coverage throughout, knocking away a pass intended for Cambre. Jason Pinnock broke up a pass for Isaiah Hodgins. Deonte Banks ran in stride with Odell Beckham Jr. on a deep pass down the sideline.
* Beckham had a second straight practice where he made some impressive catches. He made a contested catch in 1-on-1's. Jevon Holland had a hand on the ball and tried to get it out of Beckham's hands, but the receiver kept control. Later in practice he showed off his sideline awareness with a toe tap and made another downfield catch after finding a hole in the zone.
* During wide receiver-defensive back 1-on-1's, the offense and defense had a physical 9-on-7 drill. Bob Papa reported to me that the offensive line sprang a couple of runs past the line of scrimmage.
* The situational work today focused on successfully executing victory formation, including one with the team backed up on their own one-yard line.
* During the first team 11-on-11 drill, the second team defense lined up against the first team offense and visa-versa. On the second play of the period, Jaxson Dart hit Darnell Mooney on a deep out for a long gain.
* Raheem Layne had a big day. He grabbed an interception on a pass that was thrown high and behind the receiver. One play later, he tracked down a running back on a long run and stripped the ball away. Korie Black picked the ball up and ran it the other way. In the same period, Elijah Campbell came away with an interception, undercutting a pass intended for Calvin Austin III. Newcomer DJ James also knocked away a pass intended for Gipson.
* Kayvon Thibodeaux had a run stop when the first defense team took the field. He also had a free run at the quarterback later in practice. He continues to be active rushing the passer from the insider and from the edge. Tyler Nubin blitzed around the edge for a potential sack, and Jack Kelly got into the backfield for a potential tackle for loss. Jason Pinnock was near the quarterback on a scramble for a potential sack and both Khalid Kareem and Trace Ford had pressures on the same play. Colton Hood played a wide receiver screen well, getting right past the blocker for a quick stop.
* The next team portion featured 4th and goal situations for the offense. Dart hit Mooney for a score but the play might have been blown dead because of a Zacch Pickens sack. Dart had a crazy scramble, rolling all the way to the right before changing direction and going all the way to the left and running the ball in for a score. Ar'Darius Washington showed off his vertical, leaping to knock away a high throw to Theo Johnson. On a well-executed play action pass from under center, Dart hit a wide open Patrick Ricard for a touchdown in the flat. Cam Skattebo finished off the period for the ones with a rushing score.
* With the second team offense, Jameis Winston hit Juju Smith-Schuster for a leaping touchdown towards the back of the end zone, despite tight coverage from Tyler Nubin. He just got his feet down on the end line. Tremaine Edmunds knocked away a pass intended for Tanner Conner, but it deflected right to Jalin Hyatt for a score. Hyatt was on the receiving end of a number of completions during practice. Xavier Gipson caught a diving touchdown near the right sideline from Winston. Thomas Fidone nearly had a touchdown but he stepped on the end line after securing a throw.
* The Giants worked no-huddle in their final team period. Darius Alexander batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. Darius Muasau broke up a pass to end the period.
* Dominic Zvada made all eight field goal attempts, including two from 50+ during the field goal period, and then an extra point at the end of practice.
* There was a good give and take between the offensive and defensive lines during 1-on-1's. Arvell Reese participated in that drill for the first time, and showed his burst and speed, but the offensive linemen managed to run him past the quarterback. Daniel Faalele can be so dominating with his size. Once he gets his hands on the rusher and clamps down, there is no escape from his overwhelming length. They also worked on some pass rush games with some twists and stunts against the guards and offensive tackles. Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter executed one and created a pressure, but Andrew Thomas helped shut down one involving Reese on the right side of the defense.
* The final true team period focused on third down. Caleb Murphy had a potential sack in the period. Dart ran for a first down and also hit Smith-Schuster for another. Anfernee Orji had an impressive pass breakup on a back-shoulder pass down the right sideline. Reese, Carter, Murphy and Gholston got into the backfield on a couple plays against the second team offense for quarterback pressures.
* Practice ended with 4th down and the game on the line with the offense needing a touchdown to win. After a false start pushed the offense back, Thibodeaux and Nubin combined for a sack. Nubin prevented a completion to Theo Johnson on the next play with tight coverage. Dart did hit Johnson for a touchdown as Darius Alexander pressured him in the backfield.
* Jameis Winston completed three touchdown passes in his opportunity, hitting Gipson, Fidone and Hyatt for scores, but the defense got their revenge on the next play when Art Green came down with the interception.
* I have just one other note. In the years I have been doing this, these John Harbaugh practice sessions have many more active full-speed periods. There's a lot happening every day.
