Practice Report (8/4): Notes from the sideline

DJ-READER-CITIZENS

The Giants held their second consecutive padded practice at The Greenbrier on Tuesday. This one lasted two hours under partly sunny skies with temperatures in the low 80s with high humidity.

* The team worked on punt coverage in the early special teams portion of practice. Tyler Nubin, Micah McFadden and Ryan Miller were seen at the personal punt protector position. The following players were involved on the perimeter working as either gunners or vice players on the coverage and return teams: Deonte Banks, Korie Black, Art Green, Raheem Layne, Jalin Hyatt, Beaux Collins, Elijah Campbell, Dalen Cambre, Nic Jones, Damon Bankston, Jason Pinnock and Colton Hood.

* Ben Sauls was consistent kicking the ball today, missing only 2 of 12 kicks through different periods of practice. He made all four "must-have" extra points to give the Giants offense the win at the end of practice, including one from 48 yards away.

* The Giants offense ended practice on a high note, with three touchdowns in the competitive red zone period. The offenses got the ball with 42 seconds to play, down six points with one timeout at the 18-yard line. The first team offense scored on their fifth play, with Jaxson Dart scrambling to his left and into the end zone for the score. He then tossed the ball at a defender, forcing the extra point back 15 yards. John Harbaugh said after practice that Dart knows that it was a lapse in judgment.

* Jameis Winston hit Dalen Cambre on a quick out for a score with the second team, a play after getting the ball to the five-yard line on a completion to Braxton Berrios. Brandon Allen hit Ryan Miller on his back shoulder near the pylon for the touchdown with the third group.

* The Giants did their first 9-on-7 run drill of camp, focusing on the interior run game. The offensive line got some nice push at the line of scrimmage, but linebackers Micah McFadden, Zaire Barnes and Trace Ford helped make stops for the defense.

* During 9-on-7, the wide receivers and defensive backs did a one on one drill. Darnell Mooney, Braxton Berrios and Xavier Gipson all won over the top for scores. Darius Slayton ran a nice route to create a lot of separation on one play. Colton Hood knocked a pass away over the middle, while Art Green had one on the sideline. Jalin Hyatt made two tough contested catches.

* The situational part of practice had the Giants working on 4th down and distances between one and four yards.

* The team also worked on being backed up on their own one-yard line and trying to get the ball out of the shadow of its own end zone. Jaxson Dart used his cadence to draw two offside penalties, but Jameis Winston's cadence made one of his own offensive linemen commit a false start penalty. Shelby Harris had a stop on a run for no gain during the period. Deonte Banks and Dru Phillips both blitzed out of the secondary and got around the quarterback. DJ Reader had a tackle for loss penetrating the middle of the offensive line. Zaire Barnes had a run stop.

* Offensive and defensive line 1-on-1's were entertaining with some very competitive reps between the two groups. Abdul Carter got a clear win rushing from the outside and another on the inside. Kayvon Thibodeaux continues to get reps as an inside and outside rusher. Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa got to match up twice with Abdul Carter on inside rushes. Josh Ezeudu and Aaron Stinnie both had multiple strong reps. Patrick Ricard and Chris Manhertz also participated in some 1-on-1 battles against outside linebackers.

* In 7-on-7 drills, Greg Newsome and Jason Pinnock both knocked passes away thrown over the middle. Paulson Adebo grabbed an interception. Jaxson Dart hit Odell Beckham Jr. for a touchdown after a short scramble, and Dalen Cambre caught a touchdown pass from Brandon Allen.

* In the team red zone period, the defense started fast, forcing a Dart scramble with Abdul Carter tracking him to the sideline before Dart threw the ball away. Carter also played a jet sweep to Calvin Austin III well. DJ Reader got into the backfield for a sack. Darius Alexander continues to play well in team portions of practice with a run stop, potential sack and batted pass at the line of scrimmage.

* Jason Pinnock grabbed an interception, sitting into a zone window right in the path of an attempted slant. Nic Jones played good coverage to prevent a completion. Colton Hood ripped the ball out of the hands of Beaux Collins on a jump ball in the right corner of the end zone. Bobby Jamison-Travis had a tackle for no gain at the line of scrimmage.

* The offense caught fire at the end of the period. Dart hit Isaiah Likely in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Dru Phillips jumped to get his hand on the ball, but not high enough to knock it off the path to Likely for the score. Dart then his Darnell Mooney near the left sideline for a score on an out route. Jameis Winston connected with Jalin Hyatt over the defense in the back-half of the end zone for a touchdown, and two plays later he hit Isaiah Hodgins in the back of the end zone for a score.

* The Giants hit the field tomorrow for two and a half hour workout, with four practices remaining at The Greenbrier.
