Practice Report (8/11): Sideline observations

CALVIN-AUSTIN-CITIZENS

The Giants were back in shells for their 12th training camp practice on Tuesday in East Rutherford. Temperatures got up around 90 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

* Even though the team was in shells, they did work 9-on-7 early in practice, though it was not nearly as physical as the padded version. But it was still an opportunity to work on run fits on inside runs. Later in practice, they worked on fourth and short situations at a similar pace.

* During 9-on-7, the wide receivers and defensive backs ran 1-on-1 drills. Calvin Austin III caught one downfield on a post-corner route where he separated from the defensive back. On the very next play, Xavier Gipson won over the top down the right sideline for a long gain. Odell Beckham Jr. got behind the cornerback on a deep flag route on a perfectly thrown pass over his shoulder. The play of the period came when Jevon Holland lined up on Braxton Berrios. Berrios got a step on Holland over the top, but Holland got his hand up late and tipped the ball, which hit off Berrios and then back to Holland for the interception. Colton Hood had a pass breakup on the right side, as well.

* The team also ran 1-on-1 pass rush drills. Andrew Thomas won his two matchups and Jermaine Eluemunor won his first. Marcus Mbow showed off his quick feet, riding a rusher around the edge of a quarterback. JC Davis won both of his reps at right tackle, including one where he adjusted perfectly to an attempted inside spin move.

* The receivers ran pass skeleton (7-on-7) in the red zone during those 1-on-1 drills. Arvell Reese made what might have been the play of practice, undercutting a pass to the right. He leapt and used his length to tip the ball to himself for the interception. Jaxson Dart hit Theo Johnson on an intentionally high throw for a score before squeezing a pass into Malachi Field over the middle for another score. Jameis Winston hit Xavier Gipson, who caught it with one hand. Thomas Fidone II also caught a touchdown on a crossing pattern near the goal line. Deonte Banks, Micah McFadden and Art Green all had pass breakups during the period.

* The situational period featured end of half situations, including the quarterback throwing the ball away with enough loft to get time to run off the clock for the half to end.

* On the third play of the first team period, Brian Burns and Abdul Carter exploded around the edge, forcing Jaxson Dart to step up in the pocket, but he managed to find Theo Johnson for a short completion. Later in the period, Winston hit Fidone down the field. The tight end fully extended and pulled it in with one hand for a spectacular catch. Dalen Cambre caught a screen pass but Jevon Holland was in perfect position to make the play near the line of scrimmage. Khalid Kareem put pressure on the quarterback on two of the final three reps.

* In the no-huddle period of practice, Ar'Darius Washington pressured the quarterback on a blitz. Kayvon Thibodeaux and Leki Fotu combined for a potential sack. On the next play, Thibodeaux knocked a pass down at the line of scrimmage, and then Nic Jones broke up a pass down the field. Anfernee Orji, Bobby Jamison-Travis and Art Green all had stops or tackles for loss in the period.

* In team red zone with a focus on passing the ball, Colton Hood had a pass breakup and Abdul Carter had a potential sack on back-to-back plays. Micah McFadden knocked a pass away and David Long played tight coverage down the field. Carter had another pressure, forcing the quarterback to throw it away. Tyrone Tracy Jr. caught a short touchdown pass over the middle just over the goal line.

* The final period featured a lot of empty formations, which often means the ball is coming out of the quarterback's hand quickly. Darius Alexander created a pressure leading to an Arvell Reese sack. Nic Jones had a pass breakup and a run stop. The play of practice for the offense came when Jameis Winston tried to find Chris Manhertz but the pass was deflected before hitting off the helmet of Jason Pinnock. It then popped into the air and into the outstretched hands of Manhertz.

* The Giants are back on the field for a two and a half hour practice tomorrow.
