Anatomy of a Giants comeback for the record books

TERADATA

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Notes and statistics from the Giants' 31-28 come-from-behind victory against the Arizona Cardinals in State Farm Stadium:

*The Giants trailed in the third quarter, 28-7. The 21-point deficit is tied for the largest they ever faced in a game the Giants rallied to win. This is their third such comeback, the second against the Cardinals and their first in almost 74 years.

On Dec. 2, 1945, the Giants fell behind the Philadelphia Eagles in the Polo Grounds, 21-0, before Arnie Herber caught four touchdown passes to give them a 28-21 triumph. The Giants repeated the feat on Oct. 30, 1949, against the Cardinals, who were then based in Chicago. Playing in Comiskey Park, the Giants were in a 28-7 hole at halftime before surging to a 41-38 victory.

*The Giants improved to 1-1 and face a short week before facing the 2-0 San Francisco 49ers on Thursday.

*The Giants improved to 52-42-5 in road openers. Their 52 victories trail only the Green Bay Packers (58) all-time.

*The Giants gained 439 yards, the second-highest total of the 21-game Brian Daboll era and the most they've had in a victory; they totaled 445 yards in their loss last Dec. 24 in Minnesota.

*The Giant's 321 net passing yards were also the second most they've had and their highest total in a victory under Daboll; they threw for 324 yards last Nov. 20 in a loss to Detroit.

*One week after they were shut out by Dallas, 40-0, the Giants trailed at halftime, 20-0. It was the first time the Giants were shut out in the first six quarters of a season since 1934 (first seven quarters). Let it be noted the Giants won the NFL championship that season, beating the Chicago Bears in the famous Sneakers Game.

*The Giants were the first team to surrender at least 60 points in a season before scoring since the 1978 Baltimore Colts (86 points).

*The Giants allowed the first 20+ points in consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 8-17, 2013, in losses to San Diego and Seattle.

*Daniel Jones completed 26 of 37 passes for 321 yards, two touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 103.5. It was his 15th career game with a rating of 100.9 or better.

*This was the 10th game (nine regular season, one postseason) in which Jones led the Giants from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie to a victory. He last did it in the NFC Wild Card game in Minnesota on Jan. 15 and in the regular season at Jacksonville on Oct. 23, 2022.

*The 300-yard game was the ninth of Jones' career, plus one in the postseason. His previous two were both in Minnesota, in the Dec. 24 game and the NFC Wild Card Game last season. The Giants are 4-5 in regular-season games when Jones throws for at least 300 yards.

*Jones improved to 8-1-1 in his last 10 games following a loss (since Week 7, 2021).

*Jones rushed for 59 yards and put the Giants on the scoreboard with a 14-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. It was his 13th career rushing touchdown, extending his franchise record for a quarterback.

*This was Jones' eighth career game with at least one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown.

*Saquon Barkley led the Giants with 63 rushing yards on 17 carries, including a one-yard touchdown run, and tied with Darren Waller for the team lead with six receptions (for 29 yards, including a nine-yard score).

*Barkley ran for a touchdown and scored on a reception in a game for the fifth time in his career.

*Rookie Jalen Hyatt caught his first two career passes, for a game-high 89 yards. His 58-yard reception on the first play of the third quarter was the play that jumpstarted the Giants' offense.

*Hyatt's 58-yard catch-and-run was the longest by a Giants rookie since running back Paul Perkins had a 67-yard reception at Minnesota Oct. 3, 2016. It was also the longest first career reception by a Giants player since Perkins'. Hyatt had the longest reception by a Giants rookie wide receiver since Odell Beckham, Jr. had a 63-yarder vs. Philadelphia on Dec. 28, 2014.

*Isaiah Hodgins caught four passes for 40 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown that tied the game at 28-28 with 4:25 remaining.

*Joshua Ezeudu made his first career start and played the entire game at left tackle in place of Andrew Thomas, who was inactive with a hamstring injury he suffered last week. Ezeudu, a second-year pro, started two games at left guard as a rookie last year, most recently on Nov. 13 vs. Houston.

*Marcus McKethan played his first ever NFL offensive line snaps when he started at right guard. He replaced Mark Glowinski and played every snap. McKethan played two special teams snaps in his NFL debut last week vs. Dallas. The 2022 fifth-round draft choice from North Carolina missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in a training camp practice.

*Glowinski entered the game in the third quarter when left guard Ben Bredeson suffered a concussion.

*Graham Gano scored the game-winning points on a 38-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. It was his ninth career game-winner in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime.

*Defensive tackle D.J. Davidson played for the first time since tearing his ACL last Oct. 9 against the Packers in London.

*The Giants broke a four-game losing streak to the Cardinals and beat Arizona for the first time since Oct. 2, 2011. That game also required a Giants' comeback. They trailed, 27-17, with under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes in a 58-second span to win, 31-27

*The Giants' inactive players were left tackle Andrew Thomas, linebacker Azeez Ojulari, wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, tight end Lawrence Cager, nose tackle Jordon Riley, cornerback Darnay Holmes and safety Gervarrius Owens.
