Touchdowns & Takeaways: Quarterbacks step up

RUSSELL-WILSON-TD

The Giants were back on the practice field Sunday following the first day off of training camp.

The practice fields were covered by gray overcast skies for all of practice, although the rain did hold off until the very end of the session.

After a lot of work in the red zone over the first few days of camp, the Giants focused on second-and-long and third-down situations Sunday, the team's final practice before the pads come on tomorrow.

Here are the highlights from practice No. 4.

TOUCHDOWNS

The offense operated primarily on its side of the 50-yard-line, so there was not much scoring.

In the final team period, the Giants mimicked an actual drive, with the offense trying to move the ball down the field against the defense. Following a defensive pass interference that brought the ball down to the 1-yard-line, quarterback Russell Wilson used play-action to create a lane for himself, which he followed into the end zone for an easy touchdown.

TAKEAWAYS

The defense came up with several strong plays throughout practice, but only one resulted in a turnover.

Cornerback Dru Phillips tipped a pass from Wilson at the line of scrimmage, deflecting the ball into the air where safety Jevón Holland was able to bring it down for an interception. Holland took the ball the other way for what might have been a pick-six.

TOP PLAYS

The defense got off to a strong start during 7-on-7s, beginning with Phillips making a great play on the ball to break up a pass towards the sideline.

Linebackers Micah McFadden and Darius Muasau then combined to bat down a pass over the middle, before cornerback Nic Jones got into the action and forced an incompletion down the field.

The offense then picked things up, which started with Jaxson Dart fitting a pass into a tight window to tight end Theo Johnson, who was able to make the contested catch. This was followed by Jameis Winston hitting wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton and tight end Thomas Fidone for solid gains. Dart did the same on passes to running back Cam Skattebo and wide receiver Dalen Cambre.

The play of the day came at the start of 11-on-11 drills. Wilson threw a pass towards the sideline to wide receiver Darius Slayton, who made a fantastic, one-handed grab for a first down.

Wilson then connected with wide receiver Malik Nabers over the middle for a nice gain, but the biggest play between the veteran quarterback and star wide receiver came a little bit later in the period. Wilson led Nabers on a pass towards the sideline, which the young wideout caught and turned up field for a 30-yard gain.

Sunday might have been Dart's strongest practice of training camp. On back-to-back plays, the rookie quarterback found wide receivers Beaux Collins and Dalen Cambre for significant gains. Then on his final drive of practice, Dart hit wide receivers Juice Wells and Jordan Bly to move the offense down the field and into the red zone.

Skattebo ended practice with a highlight-reel play. Dart threw to find wide receiver Da'Quan Felton in the back of the end zone, but the pass was broken up. The ball ricocheted into the air, and Skattebo had the awareness to turn and locate the ball to try to make a play on it. The rookie running back ended up making the catch in the corner of the end zone, but his toe appeared to be on the line, which took the touchdown off the board.

The defense also got some pressure on the quarterback throughout team drills Sunday, with both outside linebacker Abdul Carter and inside linebacker Ty Summers getting into the backfield for would-be sacks.
