Touchdowns & Takeaways: Plenty of both at practice No. 8

TYLER-NUBIN-TICKETMASTER

The NFL season is here.

The Chargers and Lions took the stage Thursday night for the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Giants, meanwhile, are ramping up to their first preseason game, which will kick off a week from Saturday in Buffalo.

They were back on the field Friday morning, nearing the end of a stretch that includes six practices in seven days. They will practice again Saturday, followed by a day off, and then return Monday for a game week.

Here is everything you need to know from training camp practice No. 8:

TOUCHDOWNS

The connection between Russell Wilson and Malik Nabers will be a major factor in how far the Giants go this season, which makes every big play that much more exciting for Giants fans at camp. The two connected on a pair of touchdowns on Friday, following up their 50-yarder from yesterday.

In between the two touchdown passes, Wilson also found the end zone with his legs, something he has done 31 times in his career. The Giants have been working on quarterback runs extensively this week.

"I think we have athletic quarterbacks," coach Brian Daboll said. "Some of it, again, we play athletic quarterbacks as well so you're trying to do what's best for the team, trying to get yourself ready. We're not focused on any opponents right now, but we've done a lot of offseason projects and work, so we've got to make sure that both sides are ready for those."

And Wilson has still got it entering Year 14.

"I think that'll all work itself out once we get into game planning and deciding what we can do but he's plenty athletic, plenty fast enough," Daboll said. "You've seen him on a couple scrambles, not necessarily designed runs but he's out of the pocket and makes a guy miss. He's been good on-the-run throwing. He's been good on-the-run running, that's part of his game."

Wilson also threw a disputed touchdown to wide Wan'Dale Robinson. The referee said the wide receiver was out of bounds, but the offense strongly disagreed. Take it to the booth.

Rookie Jaxson Dart threw a red-zone touchdown to wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey on a free play.

TAKEAWAYS

The star of the day was cornerback Dee Williams, who had two interceptions and forced a handful of other incompletions. The Giants claimed Williams off waivers last December from Seattle, where he had played 12 games as an undrafted rookie out of Tennessee.

Safety Tyler Nubin also got on the board with an interception in the end zone on the final play of a two-minute drill.

Safety Dane Belton made it four for the secondary with an interception and had a lane up the right sideline for a pick-six.

TOP PLAYS

Cornerback Tre Hawkins III came flying in for a pass breakup at the goal line during a team period.

Daniel Bellinger had a pass deflection. Yes, that Daniel Bellinger. The tight end had to turn into a defender to swat away a likely interception for cornerback Paulson Adebo. Bellinger even celebrated like a defensive back in a moment of levity.

Rookie outside linebacker Abdul Carter continues to be a force and had Wilson on the run a few times.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns and defensive lineman Chauncey Golston had would-be sacks.
