Touchdowns & Takeaways: CB Art Green makes spectacular interception

ART-GREEN-TICKETMASTER

It's officially training camp.

The New York Giants put on the pads for the first time this summer, marking another important checkpoint on the NFL calendar. Now it's all systems go to the preseason opener, which is just 12 days away.

"It'll be good for the offensive and defensive linemen who now can bull rush and run games and do some things with double teams," coach Brian Daboll said before practice. "You don't really run the ball too much, I would say, in OTAs or even these first few days just because you don't want to put anybody in a bad situation. Now the double teams and the scoop blocks and the down blocks and the power rushes, that's when you start to be able to evaluate the offensive line a little bit more. Stay away from the quarterback as normal, not leaving our feet to go to the ground, but those are some of the techniques that we'll evaluate once the pads come on."

Below is everything you need to know from training camp practice No. 5.

TOUCHDOWNS

While the offensive and defensive lines held their 1-on-1 drills, the defensive backs and receivers worked on their 3-on-3 stack and bunch formations on the adjacent field.

That's where Russell Wilson hit Tyrone Tracy Jr. in stride, and the second-year running back turned the ball upfield for what would have been a long score. That was the lone touchdown of the day as the Giants worked extensively with the offense backed up.

TAKEAWAYS

Cornerback Art Green made one of the best plays of training camp so far, intercepting Jameis Winston with an over-the-shoulder, one-handed catch. Green, while running 35 yards down the field, snagged it with his left hand. He then passed it to his right hand, turned around in one motion, and then moved the ball back to his outside as he ran up the left sideline.

TOP PLAYS

Daboll said before practice that he was excited to see running back Cam Skattebo in pads, and the rookie delivered. Skattebo made a handful of plays, including a long catch-and-run on a pass from Jaxson Dart. But his best play was a run where he bounced out to the right sideline for a big gain.

"That was definitely part of the evaluation," Daboll said of Skattebo's pass-catching ability. "He was a physical player, first and foremost. When you watch the tape, a hard guy to bring down when he has the ball in his hands. There's all different shapes, sizes of running backs, different speed, different quickness, tall, short. Can they make yards when they get the ball in their hand? However that sorts itself out. Handing it to them, tossing it to them, throwing them a screen, and then how are his hands? Can you use him in the passing game? He's got good hands, he's got soft hands. I talked about it with Abdul [Carter] yesterday – this is another guy that you could evaluate on tape and see these instincts show up. He's not just a line guy. He has good football instincts. I'm looking forward to seeing him in pads."

Daboll added: "There's not many times at least that I've seen him here just in a short time or even on tape, like, "Why is he going where he's going?' He's got good feel for the blocking assignments up front, but then he's got good vision for the second level and at times the third level of when to press the ball, when to cut it back, when to keep it front side. He's got a long way to go. (He's a) rookie, but another young player that has been encouraging in the meetings and then out on the practice fields, both in walkthrough and practice."

Cornerback Dru Phillips broke up a pass during the opening 3-on-3 drills. Shortly after, Green almost had an interception.

Outside linebacker Tomon Fox notched a would-be sack during team drills.

Wilson found Malik Nabers a handful of times throughout the day, including a nice leaping grab by the Pro Bowl receiver.

Wide receiver Zach Pascal stretched out for a Jaxson Dart pass across the middle for a big gain. Pascal maintained control while absorbing some contact on the bang-bang play.

Tracy continues to make his presence known and popped a few big runs throughout the day.

Tommy DeVito hit rookie tight end Jermaine Terry II on a deep pass.
