Touchdowns & Takeaways: A play a day keeps the coaches away

MONTRELL-WASHINGTON-TICKETMASTER

After a stretch of six practices in seven days, players had Sunday off from training camp. The Giants returned to action Monday for the final open practice until hosting the second leg of joint practices with the Jets on Aug. 13.

It is also game week for the Giants.

They open the preseason on Saturday (1 p.m. ET, WNBC-TV and WFAN) at Buffalo, where Brian Daboll knows his way around. The head coach, speaking to the media before practice, did not rule out playing starters in the game.

"That's something in the next few days we'll talk about as a coaching staff, and we'll do whatever we think is best for the team," Daboll said. "But right now, these first few days are going to be about the Giants, we'll have a plan here. I wouldn't say necessarily tonight or tomorrow, we'll let these guys go and we'll do what we think is best for the team. Could they play? Yeah, they sure could play."

Here's what you need to know from practice No. 10:

TOUCHDOWNS

Rookie Jaxson Dart got the offense on the board with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Zach Pascal during 11-on-11 work inside the 10-yard line. That's where Jameis Winston also found tight end Greg Dulcich and Tommy DeVito hit running back Dante Miller for scores.

Practice ended with a flurry of plays by wide receiver and special teamer Gunner Olszewski, who returned to the team a week ago after Bryce Ford-Wheaton tore his Achilles. Olszewski put the exclamation point on the day by laying out for a touchdown pass from Winston.

TAKEAWAYS

Safety Jevón Holland, one of the first signings in free agency, intercepted a Wilson pass that went just past the fingertips of wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson. Holland returned it the other way up the left sideline for what could have been a pick-six.

TOP PLAYS

The play of the day was not a touchdown, but it did feature the growing connection between Dart and Montrell Washington. The wide receiver made a slick one-handed grab while falling backwards during 7-on-7 drills.

"I'm just trying to make a play just to get on the team, to be honest with you," Washington said after practice. "That's just really it, I'm just trying to make plays every day. A play a day, my motto, a play a day, keeps the coaches away. So, I'm trying to make as many plays as I can."

Tight end Theo Johnson opened with a nice sideline catch on a ball from Wilson.

Cornerbacks Deonte Banks, TJ Moore, and Tre Hawkins III broke up passes. Hawkins' play prevented a potential touchdown catch by wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey on a ball from Dart.

Wilson and Malik Nabers have removed all doubt any time a deep pass is in the air. It is inevitably in the right place at the right time, and the wide receiver plucks it out of the air with sure hands.

Earlier in the day, Daboll spoke extensively on the relationship between the accomplished veteran and rising star.

"I think he's had a very positive impact on Malik," Daboll said of Wilson. "They have a good relationship, they spend a lot of time in the meeting room and then they spend time outside just in terms of body maintenance, how Russ takes care of his body, the things he's done to have a long career. He's kind of grabbed hold of that, asks a lot of questions, he's very involved.

"Talking about Malik in the meetings, communicative. I know you see a lot of the plays that he makes out on the field. But the thing I'm most proud of is the growth he's made as an individual in the meeting rooms, outside the building. And I think Russ has had a big impact on that as well. He's one of our best players, in terms of Malik. And I think he's made strides from year one to year two in a lot of areas. And I'm very proud of how he's approached really the whole offseason and then into training camp. But I do think that the relationship he has with Russ has been impactful."

Speaking of confidence-builders, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt pulled in a nice back-shoulder throw from Wilson on the left sideline.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns had a would-be sack, which has become a daily occurrence.

Dante Miller drew a long defensive pass interference penalty to set up the Winston to Olszewski touchdown.
