Touchdowns & takeaways from OTA No. 2

JAXSON-DART-BOBS

OTA No. 2 is in the books.

The Giants hit the practice fields again on Wednesday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. They will practice again on Thursday, which will include media sessions with coach John Harbaugh and players, and then break for the holiday weekend.

Here's everything you need to know from today's practice:

Touchdowns

Tight end Theo Johnson, a fourth-round draft pick entering his third season, hauled in a pass from Jameis Winston near the goal line and twisted into the end zone for a score. He wasn't the only tight end to make the highlight reel. More on that later.

During the same red zone period, Winston threw another touchdown to running back Eric Gray; outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux showed a nice spin move to apply pressure on the play.

Takeaways

The takeaway today likely would have also been a touchdown. Cornerback Rico Payton intercepted a pass late in practice and took it the other way.

Play of the Day

The play of the day was neither a touchdown nor a turnover, but tight end Isaiah Likely did his best Jordan logo impersonation to snag a Jaxson Dart pass with one hand over the middle.

Likely spent his first four seasons under Harbaugh in Baltimore, and the head coach has said his stats will only improve with the Giants based on what they will ask him to do. On top of that, Harbaugh said this week at the Giants Town Hall that the tight end room has the potential to be the best in the league.

Notable

Wide receiver Calvin Austin III continued to rack up the catches (and yards after) as he has been a frequent target for Dart in the early going this spring.

Cornerback Dru Phillips was in position to stuff a screen pass. He later would have had a tackle for loss on a running back.

Dart threaded the needle a few times, including a completion to wide receiver Gunner Olszewski during a 7-on-7 period.

Cornerback Greg Newsome II, a veteran offseason addition, prevented a touchdown at the start of a red zone period by breaking up a pass in the back-left corner of the end zone.

Shortly after, outside linebacker Brian Burns jumped and spread out his arms and legs to get in the quarterback's vision, forcing an incompletion.

Thibodeaux was near the ball all day and would have thwarted a quarterback run play.
