Practice Report (7/31): View from the field

BRIAN-BURNS-CITIZENS

The Giants wrapped up their third practice at The Greenbrier in West Virginia on Friday. It was a bit hotter today with temperatures in the low 80s under sunny skies. The weather could not have been better the first three days of camp. The team was in shells for the first time as they continue to ramp up to full pads coming on Monday.

* The Giants continue to work a lot on their early down running attack. Devin Singletary broke away from the line of scrimmage on one run and took it to the house for a possible touchdown. Jameis Winston and Cam Skattebo both ran down the field to celebrate with him. There's still no contact without pads and it can be hard to tell if the run would have been stopped near the line of scrimmage, but it was good to see a run break out of the gates.

* The defense made some plays of their own. Jack Kelly burst through the line during the first team period for a stop around the line of scrimmage. Darius Muasau and Dru Phillips both penetrated on outside runs stopping the back for what would have been big losses. Beau Brade also got into the backfield for a potential tackle for loss. Chase Ford and Chauncey Golston also made plays around the line of scrimmage.

* Jameis Winston connected with Jalin Hyatt on a jumping catch down the seam during the first team period for a big gain. Jaxson Dart also hit Darius Slayton on a crossing route for an explosive gain.

* Brian Burns and Tyler Nubin charged into the backfield for a potential sack during the first team period, while Leki Fotu capitalized on good coverage downfield to get to the quarterback. Korie Black knocked away a pass intended for Ryan Miller.

* Ben Sauls was the only player kicking field goals today, making 6 of 8. Both misses came from 50+ yards, but he made two more when they really counted at the end of practice. The offense was trying to score on the defense in a two-minute situation, and he made kicks from 48 and 59 yards as the clock ticked towards zero.

* During 7-on-7, Ar'Darius Washington came over late on what looked like a successful back-shoulder throw from Dart to Malachi Fields and broke up the pass. Dart got hot towards the end of the period with two straight completions on accurate throws to Fields on a deep out, and another to Isaiah Likely over the middle.

* During the second team period, Brian Burns and Abdul Carter both got into the backfield more than once to force a throw away and a quarterback scramble. Jevon Holland also blitzed for a would be sack. Jameis Winston completed the longest pass of the day, hitting Dalen Cambre on a leaping catch down the right sideline.

* The practice ended with two-minute situations at the end of the second quarter. The offense got the ball with 44 seconds remaining on their own 39-yard line with no timeouts. The offense scored two field goals on the two aforementioned Sauls' kicks, but the defense also got two stops. The first came after pressures by Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, and the second came on an interception from second-year defensive lineman Darius Alexander. He dropped into a zone and made a nice catch, securing the possession for the defense.

* The Giants will have their fourth consecutive non-padded practice on Saturday before an off day on Sunday. They return to work on Monday with their first padded practice of camp.
