Touchdowns & takeaways from first day of training camp

Practice No. 1 is in the books.

After veterans reported for training camp on Tuesday (rookies arrived a week earlier), the team took to the practice fields at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for the first time since minicamp in mid-June. Now there are just 17 days until the preseason opener and 46 until the real thing begins Sept. 7 at Washington.

"Everything is new each year," coach Brian Daboll said alongside general manager Joe Schoen at their pre-camp press conference. "We like the guys we've brought in, the additions, we like the draft picks that we've had, how they've worked. I like how we competed in the spring, so I'm looking forward to training camp. This is the start of the season. We've got a long way to go. Got a lot of things we got to continue to improve on day by day with the goal to be ready to go at the start of the season."

Here is everything you need to know from practice:

TOUCHDOWNS

Just like OTAs, the Giants worked exclusively in the red zone on the first day. And on the very first play of 7-on-7 drills, Russell Wilson found wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson in the back corner of the end zone for a touchdown.

Wilson threw a handful of other touchdowns during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 periods, including two to wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is full-go after missing time in the spring due to a lingering toe issue. Wilson's other touchdowns went to running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. and tight end Theo Johnson, a pair of promising second-year pros.

"It was a great first day," Wilson said. "I thought we did a really good job. I thought we executed well. I thought we did some really good things, there's always things that we could always get better at after first day especially, but I thought we did a really good job. Obviously Wan'Dale in the first play, scoring a sweet touchdown. Just some of the things we did well. I thought Malik had two or three nice touchdowns. Some guys made some big-time plays. Tracy had a good day in the end zone, as I mentioned, Wan'Dale, the offensive line did a great job communicating and being crisp and we're so much further ahead than where we were in OTAs, but we still got more to go, so that's the good part."

Rookie running back Cam Skattebo, the Giants' fourth-round pick who finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting last season, is also full-go to start training camp and caught a touchdown from fellow 2025 classmate Jaxson Dart in the first 7-on-7 period. Dart later threw another touchdown to Johnson during a team period. Skattebo found the end zone again on a pass from Jameis Winston.

TAKEAWAYS

The first takeaway of training camp was also a touchdown. Cornerback Nic Jones, who has a Super Bowl ring from his time with the Chiefs and signed with the Giants in the offseason, had a clear path to a pick-six during 11-on-11 drills. Originally a seventh-round draft choice by Kansas City in 2023, Jones has appeared in 10 career games while splitting time on the practice squad.

TOP PLAYS

Giants fans saw new cornerback Paulson Adebo up close for the first time since he signed at the start of free agency. The former Saint didn't disappoint and made a nice play to break up a pass early in the day.

Fellow cornerback Deonte Banks showed sticky coverage on a few plays to prevent touchdowns.

Dart's first pass attempt was a completion to tight end Thomas Fidone II, a seventh-round draft choice.

Greg Dulcich, another tight end, showed strong hands in traffic on a pass from Winston.

Outside linebacker Brian Burns tipped a pass on a quarterback rollout and then later ended the day by forcing Wilson to throw the ball away.

Outside linebackers Trace Ford and Tomon Fox had would-be sacks. The former would have likely stripped the ball on the play.

Safety Dane Belton didn't notch a takeaway like he did many times throughout the spring but did line up what would have been a big hit at the goal line to prevent a touchdown.
